Involving Families in Self-Management for Latinos with Type II Diabetes This free workshop will share results from a two-year project that developed and field-tested a Spanish-language Latino Multi-Family Group program to build family support for self-management of Type II diabetes. Funded by a grant from UniHealth Foundation, CSUN Valley Nonprofit Resources worked with four local agencies as field test sites, in collaboration with Alex Kopelowicz, MD, Chief of Psychiatry at Olive View Medical Center. Dr. Kopelowicz will lead this workshop, and all participants will be provided at no charge with a manual for bringing this program into their own setting. Results from the field tests show that the program is especially effective in increasing patients’ confidence about their self-management skills. Audrey Simons and Rita Juaregi, who led the field-test at San Fernando Community Health Center, will share their experiences, and participants will be encouraged to ask questions about how the program can best be used in different settings, such as medical centers, FQHCs and community health and wellness agencies. The workshop will be held Wednesday, December 5, from 4-6 pm at SFCHC in the City of San Fernando.
