When it comes to going the extra mile, Christian Orellana leads the way. In 2017, he joined SFCHC as a student intern and, within a year, was promoted to the position of medical coder and revenue cycle specialist with the Revenue Cycle Management team.

To achieve this goal, Christian completed intense and accelerated coursework in medical coding. He then passed a rigorous exam administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders to earn certification in the field. The Certified Professional Coder credential demonstrates expertise in coding medical services and procedures performed by physicians. This includes coding patient symptoms and diagnoses, as well as diagnostic tests.

Today, Christian performs highly specialized work in support of SFCHC patients, such as auditing information entered by providers into the electronic health record system for accuracy and compliance. A key responsibility is to ensure insurance information is correct and up-to-date, which prevents any billing errors.

Christian believes helping impoverished communities that lack access to adequate, compassionate healthcare is what makes SFCHC so special. Some of the most rewarding aspects of his job are working behind-the-scenes to support the front desk and assisting patients who have billing inquiries.

“We perform background work that others may not notice,” he said. “Sometimes, patients contact us with questions about a bill and don’t understand their insurance benefits. When I tell them the services are covered and they don’t have to worry about paying, it brings a smile to their face.”

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Christian is passionate about physical fitness. On March 19, he participated in the Los Angeles Marathon with a finish time of four hours and 15 minutes. In high school, he was a member of the track, cross country and wrestling teams and continued running in college.  He typically arises at 4 a.m. each morning and runs eight miles before coming to work. He also enjoys lifting weights.

Christian grew up in the San Fernando Valley and holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Administration degree from CSUN. He has two siblings and is especially devoted to caring for his parents.
